WADERS AND ICE CREAM
6:00 P.M. August may be hot and humid, but “fall” migration is underway and the Esopus Meadows can often harbor large concentrations of waders like Great Egrets and if water chestnut harvesting provides landing pads, shorebirds not always easy to locate in county too. After a tough evening of scanning the river for peeps and waders we recommend you try to recuperate over a soft serve cone post outing at one of the local ice cream establishments. Contact Wendy Tocci (wtocci@gmail.com ) to register. Scenic Hudson’s Esopus Meadows Preserve is located at 269 River Road in the Town of Esopus.
Ulster County - Spiral House Park

Morning Bird Walk with Kyle Bardwell
8-10am. Join local bird enthusiast Kyle Bardwell for a guided early-morning walk through Spiral House Park’s gardens and woodland trails, slowing down and tuning into the birds that call the park home this time of year. Early August sits at a turning point in the birding calendar — resident species are still tending late broods, while the first early migrants begin their journey south. Free to reserve, space is limited. Birders of all experience levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and wear comfortable walking shoes. For more information and RSVP here.

Tent Talk: Introduction to Birding
6 PM - 7 PM. Siuslaw Model Forest - Cornell Cooperative Extension Acra, NY
Learn the basics of birding, from choosing binoculars to using bird ID apps and spotting more birds with confidence.
This presentation covers the fundamentals of birding. Learn how to choose the right birding binoculars, discover how today’s birders use phone apps to home in on an ID, and see how birding has changed since the pandemic. This workshop will expand your birdwatching horizons and help you see more birds.
Additional Notes: Binoculars will be available for use, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer. We also recommend installing the Merlin and eBird apps on your phone before the class, as limited internet access in the forest may make downloading or setting them up during the session difficult.
$20. Get tickets here.
